What’s a Joy-rista? The name is a combination of the words Joy + Barista. Joyristas are what fuel Java Joy, an entity of Georgia nonprofit Extra Special People, is a stand-alone mobile coffee cart operation that provides employment and economic opportunities for adults with disabilities. Joyristas* meet people in the community where they already are— at their local businesses, events, and retail shops with the simple mission to spread joy in their community. Java Joy was founded in Athens and their Atlanta branch has officially hired its first Joyrista*, Liz Cicerchia!

Liz, 38, is diagnosed with Down syndrome and calls Extra Special People her “home away from home.” Her passion for people and her contagious enthusiasm led her to a successful role as a Teaching Assistant at Kids R Kids preschool since 2016.

The Java Joy mission is to create transformative experiences for people with disabilities and their families, changing communities for the better. Their vehicle is a mobile coffee cart and a passion for joy!

So… to all the folks working with Java Joy in Athens and Atlanta and to Joy-rista, Liz Cicerchia – You are our everyday heroes!
